Egypt Is Free: A Social Networking Revolution

Once again social media has sidelined main stream media in terms of reach, availability and popularity.

Last two weeks we have seen it on all major news networks how people in Egypt has used newer web technology like twitter, facebook, youtube inspite of ban of news broadcast in these regions.

Telephones dead, mobiles with limited coverage social media comes of age in bringing in a revolution in Egypt  through citizen journalism.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of twitter updates goes to Aljazeera channel ,news channel which widely covered Egypt (Headquarters in Doha, Qatar) the channel used twitter Ads for keywords like Egypt to promote their online streaming channel.

Another noteworthy event that marked Egyptian revolution was launching of speak to tweet service.

Initiated by Google that enabled people to tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers. The exact figures of success this service is still unknown but as per speaktotweet twitter page 10k people were following it, another clear indication of Google’s love for twitter also that Google may go all out to prevent facebook from buying it.

While we talk of technologies that helped citizens of Egypt, I am not taking away the spirit, the courage of the people of Egypt has shown.
