Goo.gl compared with Bit.ly, TinyURL, Ow.ly and lot more

Around a month back Google opened its url shortener for public, with three main features stability, security and speed. Based on the usage of its url shortener, pingdom.com did perform some tests and released the results with the verdict that Google has indeed managed to create a very speedy URL shortener compared to the largest url shortner bi.ly, TinyURL, Ow.ly etc.

Pingdom’s tests were based on two main factors which included Performance overhead and Reliability, and the tests were also categorised in 3 locations – All Location, North America & Europe.

Performance overhead – It is the time which the service takes to translate and forward to the original url, Goo.gl was a big big winner with 3 times faster then Bit.ly, although in Europe Goo.gl was beaten closely by ls.gd

Reliability - Which is calculated based on the downtime for the service, though Google has not been providing this service for long time, but comparing for 15 days gave the following results where Bit.ly and Goo.gl both tied with 100% with no downtime.

I had not heard of the Google URL service before now. The security feature sounds good. I’ve been thinking about shortening my own via PHP and MySQL, this will include stats. That way the shortened URLs will always be good, as compared to using a service that may be here today and gone tomorrow.

If your url data is not critical then Goo.gl service is amazing it provides all the stats you are looking for along with checking if the url points to spam site and not to mention the speed of Google in any service they provider. But anyways all the best with your own url service!

Bitly’s security feature also checks links for malware sites.

    Good to know that.

goo.gl stats currently cannot be made private, cannot be organized into groups, campaigns, etc. nor can they be deleted once created as far as I can tell. I will probably move from bit.ly, especially when G adds the stats to Analytics, but not yet…
